Garage Door Troubleshooting & Alignment

5 POSSIBLE CAUSES YOU SHOULDN'T IGNORE

WHY IS MY GARAGE DOOR CROOKED?

Walking outside and discovering your garage door is tilted, hanging unevenly, or stuck higher on one side can be an unsettling sight. Here is what causes a crooked garage door, why it is more than just a cosmetic concern, and how to handle it safely.

A severely crooked residential garage door hanging unevenly in its opening — a clear sign of an underlying lifting or guiding component failure.

You walk outside to head to work, run an errand, or let the dog out, and you stop in your tracks: your garage door is visibly tilted. One side rests a few inches above the concrete floor while the other is jammed down tight, or the top panel sits at an unnatural angle inside the frame.

A crooked, uneven garage door is more than just an eyesore that hurts your home's curb appeal. Because residential garage doors weigh anywhere from 130 to well over 300 pounds, that tilt is almost always a direct symptom of an mechanical failure in the door's lifting or guiding system.

Understanding what caused the door to come out of alignment is the first step toward getting it back into safe working order. Below are the five most common causes our technicians see in the field, along with essential safety precautions every homeowner should know.

Quick Takeaway: Stop Operating the Door

If your garage door is visibly crooked, do not keep hitting the wall button or remote to force it down. Continuing to operate a crooked door frequently pulls rollers completely out of the track, bends the horizontal tracks, or causes severe panel damage.

1.

Broken or Damaged Garage Door Cables

High-strength aircraft-grade steel cables run along both sides of your garage door, connecting the bottom brackets to the cable drums mounted above the opening. When the torsion or extension springs unwind, these cables spool up and lift the heavy door evenly.

Over years of daily cycles and exposure to Georgia humidity, lifting cables can fray, rust, lose tension, or snap outright. If a cable snaps on one side, that entire side immediately loses its upward support. The opposite cable may remain under full tension, leaving the door severely crooked and canted to one side.

Even if the cable has not broken completely, it can slip off its drum or lose equal tension, resulting in an uneven lift every time the door moves.

2.

Garage Door Track Problems (Bent, Loose, or Misaligned)

The vertical and horizontal metal tracks on either side of your garage door guide the rollers as the door ascends and descends. For the door to move smoothly and stay level, both tracks must remain perfectly plumb, parallel, and securely anchored to the garage framing.

Several track-related issues can cause a door to tilt:

  • Accidental impact: A vehicle bumper, lawn tractor, or heavy garbage can bumping against the vertical track can bend the channel inwards, stopping the rollers on that side.
  • Loose mounting brackets: Constant door vibration over hundreds of open-and-close cycles can loosen the lag screws securing the track brackets to the wall studs, allowing one track to shift out of alignment.
  • Debris or hardened grease: Dirt, small stones, or thick dried grease clogging a track can force one roller to stick while the other side keeps traveling.

When one side encounters resistance inside a bent or misaligned track, the door tilts and binds instantly.

3.

Worn, Seized, or Damaged Rollers

The rollers sit inside track hinges along the edges of each door section. A typical residential garage door relies on 10 to 12 rollers to carry its weight along the tracks.

Standard nylon or unsealed steel rollers eventually wear out. Bearings can fail, roller wheels can crack or flatten, and unlubricated stems can seize completely. If a roller freezes up or pops out of the track on one side of the door, that section will drag or jam, forcing the entire door into a severe tilt.

Replacing worn rollers with high-cycle, sealed ball-bearing nylon rollers is one of the most effective ways to restore quiet, balanced door travel.

4.

Garage Door Spring Problems (Unequal Tension or Spring Failure)

Garage door springs counterbalance the entire weight of the door. When working properly, they allow a heavy door to feel virtually weightless — requiring only a few pounds of manual force to lift.

Many double-car garage doors utilize two torsion springs mounted on a shaft above the opening, or two extension springs stretched along the horizontal tracks. Over time:

  • One spring may snap with a loud gunshot-like pop, leaving the remaining spring to bear the load unevenly.
  • One spring may fatigue and lose tension faster than the other, resulting in an asymmetrical lift that causes the door to tilt as it rises.

Because garage door springs store immense mechanical energy, adjusting or replacing them without professional winding bars and specialized training carries serious risk of injury.

5.

Loose, Broken, or Damaged Hardware

A garage door is an interconnected system made up of dozens of individual hardware components: center hinges, end hinges, top fixtures, bottom brackets, cable drums, and bearing plates.

If an end hinge cracks or its screws pull out of a door panel, that section can sag or pull away from the track. Similarly, if a set screw on a cable drum loosens, the drum can spin freely on the torsion shaft, dropping cable tension on one side instantly. What begins as a seemingly small loose bolt can quickly develop into a noticeably crooked door.

If an older door has suffered extensive panel or hardware deterioration, you may want to weigh repair against a full upgrade. See our guide on how much it costs to replace a garage door in Georgia for practical pricing and replacement considerations.

Is It Safe to Use a Crooked Garage Door?

The short answer is no. A visibly crooked garage door is unstable and should not be operated.

When a door is tilted, the weight is distributed unevenly across the tracks, rollers, and opener arm. Continuing to run the automatic opener can force rollers out of the track, bend the steel tracks, crush the top door panel, or strip the opener's drive gears.

Please keep these important safety rules in mind:

  • Do not pull the red emergency release cord: If the door is stuck partially open and crooked, pulling the release cord disconnects the opener trolley. Without the opener holding it, the heavy door can crash down rapidly.
  • Do not attempt DIY spring or cable repairs: Springs and bottom brackets are under extreme mechanical tension. Attempting to loosen or adjust them with standard household tools can cause severe injury.
  • Do not force or kick the door straight: Trying to pry or shoulder an uneven door back into alignment often worsens track damage and can cause the entire assembly to drop.

The safest course of action is to leave the door alone, keep family members and vehicles away, and contact a qualified local garage door technician to inspect the system.
